Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy systems for all
Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity facing the world today.
Whether it's for jobs, security, climate change, food production or increased incomes, access to energy is essential.
Sustainable energy is an opportunity – it transforms lives, the economy and the planet. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon initiated the Sustainable Energy for All initiative to ensure universal access to modern energy services, improve energy efficiency and increase the use of renewable resources.
Facts and figures
- One in five people do not have access to modern electric vehicles
- 3 billion people depend on wood, coal, charcoal or animal manure for cooking and heating
- Energy is the main driver of climate change, accounting for approximately 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions
- The key long-term objective is the production of low-carbon energy to improve technologies to provide modern and sustainable energy services, especially in least developed countries, small island states and landlocked developing states, in accordance to their respective support programmes
Achievements
7.1 By 2030, ensure access to energy services that are affordable, reliable and modern
7.2 By 2030, substantially increase the share of renewable energies in total energy consumption
7.3 Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030
7.a By 2030, enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technologies – including renewable resources, energy efficiency and the most advanced and cleanest fossil fuel technologies – and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technologies
7.b By 2030, implement infrastructure and improve technologies to provide modern and sustainable energy services, especially in least developed countries, small island States and landlocked developing states, in accordance with their respective programs of support
